A research team from Maejo University and Chiang Mai University discovered the newest type of mushroom in the world. It is in the Pleurotus genus (a genus used to call “the fairy mushroom or Pleurotus pulmonarius). The team has jointly studied its morphology and basic DNA information to indicate the genetic code including the evolution of such a genus and felt confident that it is a new type of mushroom of the world. The name of the new mushroom was given as “Pan-Apsorn mushroom” by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Siam Boromrajakumari on March 25, 2020.” It means an angel or fairy mushroom.

Pan-Apsorn Mushroom It can be cultured as a pure fiber in a laboratory. It can be used to cultivate more mushrooms and it is also reported as an eatable mushroom full of important proteins. It can create economic value, grows quickly in general mushroom clumps, and is more resistant to hot weather than other types of fairy mushrooms. In the future, the research team will develop it into an economic mushroom to promote its cultivation and to generate income from this kind of mushroom, as well as to use it as a prototype for future breeding in hot weather conditions.
