Maejo University launches “Clean, Bright and No Rubbish (Zero Waste) MJU Project” to move towards Green University

On Friday, December 20, 2019, Associate Professor Dr. Weeraphon Thongma, Acting President of Maejo University presided over the opening ceremony of “Clean, Bright and No Rubbish (Zero Waste) MJU Project” and gave a QR Code which the Student Development Division had invented to the participating shops to support the university policy in the field of Green Office and to educate university personnel and students to be aware of environmental protection and energy-saving. Besides, the project wanted them to be aware of the selection of materials, equipment, and appliances that should be valuable and environmentally-friendly. The project had several activities such as setting up a waste bank, reducing single-use plastic water bottles, and transforming old Maejo society into No-Plastic Maejo society. There was a launch of a new application named “Zero Waste MJU” as a tool to implant awareness into everyone’s attention on the environment to help Maejo University be a truly Green University.

The Zero Waste MJU application was developed by Mr. Burinthon Sakkhatas, Mr. Supakit Khamjai, Mr. Thitiphat Inkham, Mr. Natthawut Upanan, Mr. Nathapon Ratana-Phibunwong, and Mr. Natthaphon Umphet from the Information Technology Program of the Faculty of Science in Maejo University. It was invented as an instrument for data collection to reduce various types of waste within the university campus and could be used via a smartphone in all systems. It could be downloaded for free. There was an accumulation of points to reduce personal plastic waste. The accumulated points could be redeemed for products or discounts at any of 61 participating stores and shops on the campus. The inventors were preparing to expand its service to external stores and shops in the future. There were many faculty members, supporting staff, and students intensely interested in participating in activities and downloading the application at Therd Kasikorn Canteen of Maejo University to be a part of taking care of the environment.
