Plant Genetic Conservation Project of Maejo University as a result of the royal initiative organizes activities to return orchids to nature to build awareness of resource conservation

On July 27, 2019, the Royal Thai Orchid Conservation and Utilization of Royal Delivered Thai Purebred Orchid Project, and School Botanical Garden Project under the Plant Genetics Conservation Project due to the royal initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Siam Boromrajakumari of Maejo University organized activities to return orchids to the natural areas, to extend the products from Thai orchids, and to raise awareness of resource conservation at Baan Pong Krai community, Pong Yaeng Sub-district, Mae Rim District in Chiang Mai Province. Such activities were being honored by various organizations such as the representative from the Royal Palace Office, Dr. Piyarat Prinyiphong-Charoen-Sap, the Secretary of the Board, the Representatives from Maejo University, Assistant Professor Pavin Manochai, Vice President, Dr. Thipsuda Tangtrakul, and Assistant Professor Dr. Kanchana Nakprasom, an entrepreneur, Mr. Sanan Chart Thephasdin Na Ayudhya and Dr.Suphotak Palakul, President of Pong Yaeng Sub-district Administrative Organization, Mr. Wan Muangma, Acting Deputy Director of the Botanical Garden Organization, Dr. Piyakaset Sukasthan, and his team, conservative groups and communities, Mr. Wanchai Inyom, 40 students from various fields and youths in the community. The activities were as follows: planting 5 types of orchids to nature, namely 26 Nok Kum Fai (Anoectochilus siammensis), 30 Nang Rung (Hygrochilus Parishii), 30 Korat Yellow Rose (Aerides houlletiana), 20 Khao Kaeh (Rhynchostylis coelestis), and 30 Iyaret (Rhynchostylis retusa), totaling 136 plants. They were the first batch of Thai purebred orchids to grow in the natural areas. There were dialogues on how to expand Thai orchid products, to make Thai orchid tea, to study community context, to store plant seeds, to create arts from natural materials, and to prepare advertising media to publicize the communities, etc.
