Assoc. Prof. Dr. Apinun Suvarnarak, a lecturer of the Faculty of Fisheries Technology and Water Resources and Director of the Office of Agricultural Research and Extension of Maejo University discovered a new species of batfish in the world from the Mae Kui River Basin, Omkoi District in Chiang Mai Province. It is called “Omkoi Bat Fish” and its scientific name is Oreoglanis omkoiense Suvarnaraksha, 2020. Its story was published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, issue 68, pages 779-790, 2020. The fish of this genus are found in low-temperature watersheds, strong, clear, clean water. It can be used as an indicator to measure ecological integrity and give food security for people on the highland.
